Ladies,
do any of the following apply to you?
- Are
you afraid to walk to your car alone?
- Do
you avoid shopping at night?
- Are you
concerned about the neighborhood you live in?
- Do you worry
about your safety when walking/gogging?
If so,
maybe it's time for a little "Secret Courage"!
Why
should you own a handgun? Because when seconds count, the police
are only minutes away!
A
friend of mine who lives in a rather nice community recently told me
she was worried about walking her little dog at night. While not
a paranoid person, she had a revelation that there were so many dark
places for "creeps" to hide as she walked along. I
admired her for not walking around with blinders on as we often
do. She was making simple observations about her own
safety.
The topic of owning a handgun came up as a result of my
being an NRA pistol instructor. As I explained the benefits
of carrying a concealed handgun my friend seemed nervous and
unsure. Her mother chimed in and said: "It's
kind of like having a little secret courage." For all of
my
experience, statistics, and stories, I could never have said it better.
One of the hardest things for me to overcome when suggesting the
purchase of a firearm is that the person is often as afraid of "guns"
as they are the criminals! I decided to help
educate people about the safe use of firearms so they can make an
informed and educated decision about their personal safety.
The
world we live in can be a very dangerous place. Most of us
try not to think about it. Yet a
savvy person takes certain precautions to protect themselves and their
loved ones. For example many of us have smoke detectors and fire
extinguishers in our homes, cars, boats & RV's. The chances
of actually needing them
are slim, but we are ready just the same. Does that makes us
paranoid? Does it ruin the way we live or look at the
world? Does being ready to protect ourselves mean we have a jaded
view of society? Of course not. It simply means we are
savvy, educated adults, taking responsibility for our own safety.
It's odd how "some" people comment about how "you're just out looking
for a gunfight" if you carry a firearm. If you have a fire
extinguisher in your car or boat, are you running around looking for
fires to put out?
Have you ever heard anyone say "Aw you don't need
a fire extinguisher..... the fire department is just up the
street!" Having
been a firefighter and paramedic for 13 years I can tell you ANY public
safety professional will agree, a fire extinguisher is a must in your
home, automobile, RV, or boat. Why? Because you may be able
to buy yourself some precious time before the fire department
arrives. As mentioned above... when seconds count, the police
are only minutes away!
So why is there this
perceived cloud of gloom and doom over responsible ownership of a
handgun? Who is it that came up with the bright idea of waiting
for the police during a violent attack or crime? Why should we be
any less inclined to protect ourselves while waiting for the police to
arrive? What is the difference between a fire raging toward your
child's bedroom or a hell-bent criminal raging toward your child's
bedroom? Are you any less likely to protect the people you love
from criminals than you are a fire? Do you really think
that knife, baseball bat, or pepper spray is really going to scare
anybody?
You're kidding, right? You're betting your LIFE on it!
Let's pretend the
police could be anywhere on the planet earth within 2 minutes.
For the next 2 minutes I want you to sit there, close your eyes, and
imagine what an attacker could do to you or a loved one in that
time. Go ahead.... tic-toc, tic-toc, tic-toc. Horrifying,
isn't it?
Handguns are used
for self defense over 2 Million
times each
year in the U.S.
Owning a
handgun is not rocket science! However the consequences
of misusing a handgun are often ugly. So you have to be TRAINED
in the safe use and
storage practices of your handgun and ammunition.
Remember how nervous you were the first time you drove a car? One
false move and CRASH! Now every day when you drive to work, you
are just INCHES from thousands of pounds of metal and glass, operated
by people of unknown competence, consciousness and sobriety zooming
past you! One tiny mistake by you OR THEM could result in
disaster. But you don't really sit there and think about it, do
you? Your safe driving habits have become second nature.
You were trained & practice safe driving. (I hope!)
If you managed to read this far, you
have zillions of questions. I am going to address ONE of them
right here:
"I have kids in my
house. How can I have a loaded gun in the house for personal
protection with children around?"
- A handgun that is unloaded is WORTHLESS for self
defense. Did you know that you can purchase a gun safe
that has a drawer like a cash register and a thumb print scanner for a
lock? You can keep your LOADED
and READY handgun in it. Your gun will be safe from unauthorized
persons such as children, thieves or guests. But when you need
it,
all you have to do is stick your thumb on the top of it. It
instantly scans your thumb print, and if it's you, the drawer pops
open! So I guess we just answered the question about having a
loaded gun in the house with kids around! See? It's NOT
rocket science!
Owning
a handgun for personal defense is a very personal choice. My goal
is to
provide you with plenty of information AND practical experience so that
you can make that choice, and decide what is best for you. Please

| You may obtain an Indiana gun permit by
applying at your local law enforcement department or office.
There is a 4 year permit and a lifetime permit. You will need to
fill out an application, have your signature on it notarized, and
submit the appropriate fee. As you do so at your local law
enforcement department or office, they will fingerprint you. It
takes about 6 weeks to get your permit in the mail. This is a
very EASY process! |
